Gainesville Fashion Week: Red Carpet and Art Show
It was only a Wednesday but with Gainesville Fashion Week on board, it was a Wednesday like no other.
Last night kicked off Gainesville Fashion Week's 2010 season. Hosted in the Sharab Lounge, guests experienced two parties in one. Downstairs, invite-only guests were entertained by the Phobooth's picture studio, fed by Calico Jack's wraps and wings and The Truffle Cake Co. dainty desserts.
But upstairs an open art gallery allowed spectators to check out the work of fourteen local artists, ranging from photography, mixed medium pieces and paintings.
And guests got to awe over handmade jewelry by Courtney Lee Designs and Laurel B Jewelry upstairs too.
This was only the beginning. Coming up are three consecutive nights of amazing fashion designers with three designers per night. On Thursday night, Wolfgang, Calzatura, and Kenneth McCraney will be showing at the Vault. The show starts at 8 p.m.
If you haven't purchased your tickets yet, buy them at Event Brite. Here's the direct link to tonight's show!

GFW Hits Harrods of London
We checked in with GFW Media Coordinator Melanie again this week, she tells us how our promo meeting went at world famous Harrods Department Store in Knightsbridge, London.
Let me start off by asking did you know that Harrods sells pets? I truly did not, you know you hear the saying, "You can find anything at Harrods". Yeah, no joke! They've got 1500 GBP (multiply that by $1.65 for USD) pet guinea pigs, dogs, cats, rats, rabbits, fish...and then two floors down are the Prada and Mui Mui departements. Too crazy! Sadly it wasn't cuddle time when I was on that floor.
I'm back home from a long afternoon of trepsing and touring with part of the core team at Harrods. I got to learn a bit about their fantastic window displays; or as we in TV call it, staging. I hope you can see the amazing detail with my crappy camera, these are my street photos. This season's theme is "Wonderland" as in Alice; perhaps in keeping with the recent movie release, the season of Easter and/or bunnies. Nonetheless the bigger, the better and the more outstanding - that's really what Harrods is all about.
How cool is this crystal-studded turntable!!!
So each platform display, which covers the circumference of the store, is decorated in a different theme. Windows and signage have a little something smaller but similar, like a bunny on top of the new Balenciaga perfume (which by the way, smells great!!!). The platforms take a different scene from the story.
Alice's "hearing" by The Queen of Hearts at high court...or
The Mad Hatter's Tea Party where Rabbit is late for a very important date (would have been cool to use the real rabbits from upstairs but I guess that would smell like nobody's business).
So you get the idea of what this design team does. Similar to your GFW Team they come up with seasonal themes, they plan and style accordingly and "Make it Work!" because really, you only start with the mannequins. Did you know mannies in the UK are insured while some employees at a certain chain department store are not? (not calling any names). Yes, I had to wait on the "Still Fitting Specialist" to come grab my size down from the mannie since it wasn't covered in the regular guy on the floor's wages.
All in all a creative afternoon and can I just say, a possible celebrity sighting could have taken place but no one was as interested as me. I come out of Harrods and a few doors down there's a HUGE, heavily-tinted Rolls Royce and 7 series Beemer parked outside of Giogrio Armani. Complete with uniformed driver polishing the back glass. I thought if the person were that important they would have locked the shop, but the doors were wide open so I guess I'll never know...I didn't want to look like a nosy American tourist.
See you at Fashion Week!!!
Melanie.

Sponsor Update: Pita Pit
Pita Pit was created on the idea that people want an exciting alternative to fast food restaurants - somewhere with great tasting food that’s healthy, fresh, and still served fast.
So Pita Pit ditched the heavy breads and buns, and came up with special light, tasty, Lebanese-style pitas and vowed to fill them with only the good stuff. Lean, savory meats that could be grilled to perfection, or unique, flavorful cheeses. Combine this with a large choice of crisp, fresh veggies and exotic toppings, including our own zesty signature sauces. Viola!
Pita Pit's pitas were also developed with a special fold, so these tantalizing flavors could be all rolled into one.
Check them out with two locations in Gainesville: W. University Ave and SW Archer Rd or online.

Designer Spotlight: Mikho Karajito
About the Collection:
the beautiful people of New York City have inspired this collection: strangers, commuters, colleagues; well-suited successful men and women that stride the streets of this never-sleeping metropolitan without a hair out of place. The same individuals that escape their beloved big apple at the end of the workweek to find getaways in exotic destinations such as Fire Island, Miami or Mikonos only to peel off beautiful layers of business attire to expose what's hidden underneath: imaginative inked skin, piercings and well-toned bodies, all garnished with a healthy dose of summer sweat.
About the Artist ( Miguel Blanco):
Having earned a degree in art, I have a mental museum of images and styles of which I raid on a daily basis combined with a infinite library of artistic resources available in the city to deliver this collection. This season, the juxtaposition of autumn patterns synonymous with the workplace: tweeds, hound's tooth, pin stripes - in addition to a few metallics have been combined with retro inspired silhouettes to be latter embellished with pops of color. Such combination of seemingly disjointed elements, interconnected and interdependent are presented in each piece, giving rise to each other in turn, creating in effect a Yin Yang.

GFW 2010 runway shows taking place at The Vault
GFW welcomes The Vault as a presenting sponsor and this years runway show venue.
Break into The Vault - A brand new night club opening in downtown.
In August 2009 partners Dave Keljik, Andy Lilley and Kevin Rupkey took the shell of the historic building located on West University, completely gutted it and began the remodeling process. The project which has taken over 8 months to complete has rendered the club nearly unrecognizable to anyone who has entered the building in the past. Clientele will find wood floors, raised VIP levels including a VIP balcony with white leather couches, galvanized steel accents, 4 bars spread through-out, video projection, state of the art sound and light technology and a fresh clean feel. Even before it opens its doors, Lilley and Rupkey , (the faces of The Vault) have already begun establishing themselves and The Vault within the community by becoming involved in the Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce, ACEL, (Alachua County Emerging Leaders), and the Builder’s Association as they want The Vault to be the new place both students and young professionals call their own downtown. With over 25 years of experience combined this venue is the realization of what the three knew that they always wanted in their ideal club. “We knew we wanted the most state of the art night club technology available, lights, lasers, fog and cryogenics, to bring the latest and greatest in club atmosphere” says Lilley. “With all of the success in sports and academics at the University of Florida we originally came to Gainesville with the intention of catering mainly to the student population, but when we got up here we found that there was a need for a venue that catered to the young professionals as well.”
This new club, with over $1 million in renovations and technology, is opening its doors on April 3rd 2010. Guests will include Gainesville’s young professionals and business elite. The very next week they will be serving as the runway show location and a sponsor for Gainesville Fashion Week 2010.
The Vault is taking this venture to the next level by creating an atmosphere not offered in any other club or nightlife venue in Gainesville.
Make sure you mark your calendars for April 3rd 2010 Gainesville as The Vault gets broken in!

Gainesville Fashion Week Goes On-Campus:
Hello, readers!
This is Flavia, one of of your GFW committee members, keeping you up to speed on the latest Gainesville Fashion Week event!!
This is Flavia, one of of your GFW committee members, keeping you up to speed on the latest Gainesville Fashion Week event!!
Gainesville Fashion Week has been working really hard to reach out to the student population this season. All of you fashionable students should definitely come out tomorrow night, March 23rd, to the Gainesville Fashion Week-Coveted List Fashion Showcase!! The event will be held at the Reitz Union Grand Ballroom from 7-9pm! I can't emphasize how much hard work our team has done to put on this event, and we are soo happy that it is finally here! Today we had a really successful "flash-mob" event in the Plaza of the Americas, and tomorrow is the big show.
Here's a little info about the event:
Our goal was to put together a showcase that all women on UF's campus could relate to. The show consists of outfits that flatter all body types, heights, and skin tones. There will be 25 looks that are spring-inspired and ultra-feminine. The great part is that the event is a "sneak peek" for Gainesville Fashion Week, as the looks were pulled from boutiques and fashion designers that will have their own runway shows during the April GFW events. The best part is, it's free! I really hope that you'll join me tomorrow evening for the event!
We will have my personal favorite DJs, Thomas and Ernie, playing bangers throughout the night. There will be a little red-carpet entrance, tons of photographers, and the most chic guys and gals in town present at the event. You can also learn about Coveted List, which is an amazing website that we hope to work with in the future. Looks were provided by Dahlia Boutique, Wolfgang Boutique, Mesh Boutique, and designer BobbyK.
This past Saturday, I held the fitting for the event at my apartment. We had soo much fun styling looks for the fashion show and working with our wonderful models.
Here are some snapshots from the fitting:
Trust me, tomorrow's event is going to be one to remember! Hope to see you there!!
Sincerely,
Flavia & the GFW Team
P.S. Check out tomorrow's campus edition of the Gainesville Sun to read an article about the event and yesterday's flash-mob.
P.S.S. If you're near the Reitz tomorrow, GFW and the rest of the event team will be tabling with flyers and treats! Stop by and see us!

GFW Hits London Town!
Gainesville Fashion Week's Media Coordinator Melanie visits London for some Fashion Week prep. (We told you it was all about air travel in style this year!). Here's a note she sent us from the UK!
Greetings from Britian!
Hope all is coming together for Fashion week as I do my UK research: the street styles here are amazing!!!
I wish I took some pictures but between the rain, dodging the crowds and just general shopping on my part (couldn't resist) I didn't; BUT I will explain what I'm seeing and doing here in as vivid detail as possible.
Today (Sunday) was a very pretty, "English" day: cool weather, pockets of sun and loads of crowds hitting the streets for some shopping, eating and just general foolery. I made my way over to the Regent & Oxford St area, did some browsing in Uniqlo, Mango and saw the biggest Apple store I've ever seen in my life! I was accosted by a life-size cutout of Emma Watson (aka Hermione Granger, my favorite muggle) at Burberry and heard some Arabian hip-hop at the cool trinket shops (I'm a sucker for tacky souvenirs).
I'm seeing different trends we are leaving and/or picking up on in the US. The girls here in London are rocking the leggings look like it's (fill in appropriate year here). Black or lacy leggings with shorts and bloomers seem to be the trend, paired with frilly tops and a heavier leather/pleather/cotton jacket. Saddle bags or quilted, chain-strap purses, loadsss of necklaces and any shoe from sandals, ballets, UGGS, fake Uggs, flats or cool high-top kicks complete the look.
The guys, I think, vary on the girl they are with at least that's what I notice - the more trendy the girl..the more stylish guy, and that's a good thing right?
Have you guys heard about Primark? Dangerous place and especially dangerous around the black-to-ruby colored sequined tights area (a post about my fight for afforementioned tights will be another day).
Oh almost forgot, there was a huge display at Selfridges on Oxford Street dedicated to the work of Alexander McQueen and before the day was over, I got to check out the London College of Fashion seen here.
Conveniently located atop one of my favorite stores - Zara. Hope all is well stateside!
-Melanie.
